FAQs

What is behavioral gerontology?

Behavioral gerontology is the application of behavior analysis to aging and age-related challenges. It focuses on improving the daily lives of older adults by teaching caregivers evidence-based ways to reduce problem behaviors, increase independence, and create calmer, safer routines.

How are services delivered?

All services are provided remotely via telehealth. We work directly with caregivers--not the older adult--to teach strategies, model interventions, and guide implementation in real time. You’ll receive individualized coaching, step-by-step plans, and ongoing feedback to help your loved one succeed at home.

Who are the sessions for?

Sessions are designed for family members, home health aides, and other caregivers supporting an aging loved one. The older adult never has to be on camera; our focus is on empowering you with tools that make care easier and more effective.

What kinds of challenges can you help with?

We help caregivers manage and prevent behaviors such as:

– Wandering, pacing, or restlessness
– Resistance to hygiene, eating, or medication
– Repetitive questioning or vocalizations
– Aggression, frustration, or refusals
– Sleep disruptions or confusion about routines

We also help you build structured daily schedules, communication systems, and positive reinforcement plans that promote calm and cooperation.

Is this therapy for the older adult?

No. This is not direct therapy. It is caregiver training based on behavioral science principles. We teach caregivers how to respond, reinforce, and structure the environment to make life at home more sustainable for everyone involved.

Do I need special equipment for telehealth?

No. All you need is a smartphone, tablet, or computer with internet access. Sessions are held over secure, HIPAA-compliant video platforms, and materials are shared digitally for easy reference.

How long does it take to see improvement?

Most caregivers notice changes within a few weeks as routines become more consistent and effective reinforcement systems are used. Continued coaching helps maintain progress and adapt strategies as needs change.

Are the services really free?

Yes. 100% free. Our program is funded through supervision partnerships with graduate students completing their fieldwork in applied behavior analysis. These partnerships allow us to offer high-quality, Virginia Department of Medicine licensed practitioner-led caregiver training at no cost to families. You’ll never receive a bill, and there are no hidden fees.

How do I get started?

It starts with a 20-minute consultation call. We’ll listen to your concerns, discuss your goals, and explain how the program works. After that, we’ll match you with a BCBA or trained graduate student under direct supervision to begin caregiver sessions right away—all at no cost to you.

They Helped Us Keep Mom Home

“When my mother’s dementia started progressing, I felt like I was losing her and our home at the same time. The team at Applied Behavior Analysts showed us how small behavior changes could make a huge difference. They helped us create simple routines and visual prompts so Mom could still do things independently. I didn’t think it was possible to keep her home safely, but we’ve now made it two years--and counting."
